Performance Based Seismic Design of Tall Buildings Moderator: Ron Klemencic - Magnusson Klemencic Associates Track: Tall Buildings Date: Friday, May 1, 10:30 AM-12:00 PMThe prescriptive structural provisions of the Building Codes written in the United States and abroad can limit
architectural form for tall buildings, stifle innovation that is the hallmark of tall building design, and
encourage the use of inappropriate structural systems for tall buildings. The use of such codes, which were
not intended to be applied to tall buildings, does not guarantee acceptable structural performance during
moderate and severe earthquake shaking. Performance Based Seismic Design provides structural
engineers with the flexibility to innovate and to achieve desired performance goals through an integrated
design effort involving the state-of-art in seismic hazard computations, response-history analysis and
performance assessment. This session will focus on the latest advances in the field of the seismic design
of tall buildings, presenting and illustrating the design recommendations from the CTBUH Seismic Design
Working group, which are intended for application around the globe across all levels of seismic hazard. No Items Assigned
